Yorkshire Cup Round 2 – Bridlington RUFC U16s 40 v Redcar RUFC U16s 39

Sunday saw Redcar’s U16s make the long journey to Bridlington for round 2 of the Yorkshire Cup. As the teams hadn’t met previously, it was unknown territory for Redcar, but they soon found out the quality of the opposition as Bridlington ran in an early try and conversion. Redcar then lost their loosehead prop, Alfie Morris to a dislocated shoulder mid-way through the 1st half meaning a quick reshuffle from the coaches. Following the injury there was a bad-tempered altercation between both teams leading to a yellow card each for both sides. This however seemed to spring Redcar into life, and they bounced back with a try from forward Lewis Barnes. Both teams then traded tries, with Lewis Barnes scoring again and Jack Landles scoring following a trademark mazy run from full back. However, it was the accuracy of the boot from Bridlington that kept them ahead at half time, with them seemingly unable to miss despite some tricky touchline conversions. Half time 21-15.

The 2nd half was a breathless affair and followed a similar pattern to the 1st half, both teams trading tries with forwards Will Parnaby, Harry Cassel and centre Callum Smith all getting their names on the score sheet, but again it was the accuracy from the kicking tee which kept Bridlington ahead despite Daniel Bryce converting one of Redcar’s tries. Moving into the final 10 minutes Redcar found themselves 8 points down when winger Zak Huggins burst through Bridlington’s defensive line to cross and score what looked like a perfectly good and timely try. Despite the Referee awarding the try, he then changed his decision after a dubious call from the touch judge who claimed that the Redcar player had stepped into the dead ball zone trying to achieve a better angle for the conversion, much to the annoyance of the travelling Redcar supporters, players and coaches. Despite this set back Redcar kept up the pressure on Bridlington who were becoming desperate in their defence and conceding penalty after penalty. Redcar finally forced their way over the line with Callum Smith scoring his 2nd of the day with the conversion from Daniel Bryce being the last kick of the game, meaning that the final score was a heartbreaking 40-39 loss.

MOM: Awarded by Bridlington, the award went to Jack Landels in his 1st game back for us this season, and he made a massive difference with his strong running. Well played.
Top Tackler: Two outstanding performances from our numbers 6 & 7. Both Harry and Jamie were awesome, but the award goes to Jamie Courtney. Well played.

Despite the defeat, a massive congratulations goes out to all the players after their best performance of the season and apart from 1 key decision, really deserved to win. Thanks also to Bridlington for being a great host and for a wonderful game of rugby.
