Sunday saw the U16's play their first game of the season at Middlesbrough. Ultimately the game ended in a defeat for Redcar but there are many positives that the team can take from the game into the rest of the season.
A few points worthy of note; the Middlesbrough team is unbeaten for the majority of last season and had a number of older players getting an outing. Redcar on the other hand gave debuts to three players; Michael Todd, Theo Hogan and Josh Carter whilst giving a number of players their first competitive game in new positions.
The first half was competitive, with Redcar held within their own half but showed excellent competitive attitude in the breakdown, held their own in the scrum (against a much larger Middlesbrough pack) and defended excellently. The second half saw Middlesbrough turn the screw despite Redcar once again competing excellently and winning multiple penalties when competing in rucks, mauls and breakdowns. The pressure from Middlesbrough began to show and in the final third of the game Middlesbrough scored a few tries in succession which effectively put an end to the game.
One significant disappointment that came from the game was an injury to Stan Francis (broken ankle) right at the end of the game as a result of a heavy challenge. The injury will obviously keep a key member out for a good while, and we wish Stan all the very best with his recovery.

Although the score line is disappointing, the lads should look at the positives that were displayed in the game and build on them in the next game. Every individual showed willingness, aggression and desire which will stand them in good stead as the season progresses
