Redcar travelled away to Seaham and as in previous seasons quite a few players were unavailable for the away game, but taking nothing away from the travelling players, the whole squad put in a gutsy performance, a bit rusty at times but not unexpected for

Redcar kicked off against the wind and Seaham’s players were pumped up and ready for a hard battle, they have been made favourites for the league title having signed players from higher leagues and so were keen to impress and impress they did. They scored a try after only 4 mins, the conversion was missed, 5 – 0. Redcar won a bit of possession but turnovers at critical times gave Seaham the advantage again. Redcar suffered also in the set piece when the bigger Seaham pack put Redcar under a lot of pressure and drove them back in the scrums, Redcar’s lineout did not function as well as it can, so this added to the pressure. One area that Redcar did do well was in defence and this stopped Seaham from putting more points on the board. Seaham did score another try after 20 mins and even when Redcar’s second row Neil Young was yellow carded, Redcar still held out till half time, with the score at only 10 – 0.

Halftime Seaham 10 Redcar 0

Seaham restarted the game but it was Redcar who were first in the action after 5 mins, when centre Matty Curry’s tenacious play saw him burst through the Seaham line and score near the posts, fullback Danny Addison added the conversion, 10 – 7. Then it was stalemate for the next 20 mins, until Seaham went further ahead with a converted try to take the score to 17 – 7. A rallying cry from Neil Young spurred the Redcar team into action and on 68 mins prop Cian Briggs crashed over the line and scored, 12 – 17.

By now the Seaham forwards were playing with less of a spring in their step and Redcar threw everything into their attack and a great break from centre Josh Dixon, left full back Danny Addison clear, the pass was perfect and Danny sped along the wing and evaded the weary tacklers to cross the line and run round behind the posts to score, the simple conversion gave Redcar the lead, 17 – 19. With only a few mins to go Redcar defended like demons and when the ball was turned over by Seaham, it was gratefully accepted and booted off the pitch as Redcar celebrated the hard fought victory.

Final Score Seaham 17 Redcar 19
