A Game Of Two Halves

Sunderland kicked off against the wind and as you would expect Redcar moved straight into the Sunderland 22, wave after wave of attacking moves kept the pressure on Sunderland and after 10 mins flanker Dominic Ayre scored Redcar’s first points, fullback Danny Addison converted, 7 – 0. Redcar continued to have the lions share of the play and on 17 mins after some great back play, Danny Addison made a decisive break down the wing and passed to winger Craig Newlands who put on the afterburners to score, 12 – 0. Redcar did have several more scoring chances but the final move or pass went to ground and so the score remained the same at halftime.

As Redcar got the second half underway the wind became a lot stronger and now it was behind Sunderland. On 50 mins they eventually took their chance and centre No.13 scored a try,12 – 5. They had several attacking moves but Redcar’s defence kept them at bay and Sunderland’s frustration grew and as they gave numerous penalties away, the referee’s patience was tested, on 65 mins he gave the centre No.13 a yellow card and then 3 mins later Sunderland continued to transgress and their No.7 also received a Yellow card. This incensed the Sunderland players and supporters and did not endear them to the referee. Redcar took their chance and camped in the Sunderland 22, but again the final moves braking down and allowing Sunderland to clear their lines with the wind advantage. On 72 mins Redcar did score again, from a lineout flyhalf Jake Duddles got the ball and skated past the ineffectual Sunderland defence to score, 17 – 5 and that was how it finished.
