With a gale blowing at Redcar the home side took full advantage of the conditions from the start.

Sedgefield kicked off against the wind and Redcar were soon on the attack it only took 4 mins before the first try came, from sustained pressure as Redcar’s forwards pounded the Sedgefield line, eventually winger Gabe Holmes touched down, 5 – 0. Redcar continued to have most of the play and territory as you would expect from the strong gusting wind and it was on 8 mins that centre Dennis Hunt scored Redcar’s second try and fullback Danny Addison converted it, 12 – 0. Addison then kicked a penalty on 14 mins to keep the pressure on Sedgefield, 15 – 0. Three mins later scrum half Brad Stovell bundled over after some good forward drives, Addison converting again, 22 – 0.

Redcar were relentless they attacked at every opportunity and when Sedgefield had the ball and made handling mistakes Redcar pounced and turned them into scoring chances and on 24 mins from a Sedgefield scrum a pick up and go, the ball was dropped and Redcar’s forwards were on it and it was quickly shipped out the backs and Danny Addison and Matty Curry exchanged passes before Addison scored and converted his own try, 29 – 0.
Sedgefield did have a period of possession after 30 mins, when Redcar gave away numerous penalties, which allowed Sedgefield to get into the Redcar 22 and score, 29 – 5. Redcar had the last word in the half, when centre Matty Curry broke through into the Sedgefield 22 and evaded some ineffectual tackling to score under the posts, Addison adding the extras, 36 – 5.

Halftime Redcar 36 Sedgefield 5.

Redcar restarted the game and although Sedgefield now had the wind advantage it was Redcar who struck once again when Sedgefield were attacking the Redcar 22, they dropped the ball and Matty Curry claimed it and the forwards drove it up the field, it was then sped out to winger Craig Newlands, who had been threatening every time he touched the ball, he needed no second invitation and he skipped past the defence and romped home under the posts, Addison who’s kicking had been great considering the howling wind, did not miss with the conversion, 43 – 5. Sedgefield then had a period of about 20 mins when they were camped in the Redcar 22 and after a few penalties Redcar’s No.8 Steve Johnson was given a yellow card and from the scrum, Sedgefield pushed a depleted Redcar pack back over their line and scored, this was converted, 43 – 12. Undaunted Redcar hit back on 65 mins when substitute centre Andy Benbow, who has just returned to the club after a couple of years in Australasia, finished off a great move and scored, 48 – 12. As the game was drawing to its conclusion, winger Gabe Holmes scored his second try and put Redcar over the 50 mark.

Final Score Redcar 53 Sedgefield 12.
