Redcar Shatter Shields
By Dave Pearson
It’s been a long time coming, but Redcar went “back to the future” with an 11 try blitz.
Redcar kicked off with a slight breeze behind them, but they started as if it was a hurricane, They scored three converted tries in the first 15 mins, two from winger Gabe Holmes and one from 2nd row Neil Young, (who will never get an easier one), all converted by Danny Addison, 21 – 0. Neil got on the scoreboard again on 30 mins with a lunge from a tryline maul, Danny Addison converted, 28 – 0. Redcar continued to run the ball on every occasion and just before halftime from their own 22 Redcar broke out and a fine run from coach Matty Curry and pass, saw winger Craig Newlands fly past the remaining defence to score, this was converted by a good kick from replacement scrum half Joe Cooke, 35 – 0.
Half Time Redcar 35 South Shields 0.
Shields restarted the game and from the kick Drew Reader, (who was impervious all game from the restart kicks) caught the ball, it was passed to James Toward who from in front of Redcar’s posts cantered off up the field like a wild pony, as he ran out of steam he passed to centre Matty Curry, who ran in under the posts, The Shields No.14 was given a yellow card for a late tackle after the final pass, the try was converted by Joe Cooke, 42 – 0. After 55 mins Jake Duddles strolled in from 25 metres, Redcar won the line out Joe Cooke passed to Jake who strode in unopposed, 49 – 0. Five mins later prop Andy Little was the next to profit from Shields generosity Redcar’s backs ran the ball from their own line and when stopped a maul formed, Andy picked up the ball and went through the middle as the Shields players stood and watched and Andy ran in from 30 metres, Danny Addison converted from in front of the posts, 56 – 0. On 65 mins from the restart kick the forwards took the ball on then centre Dennis Hunt broke away and ran the length of the pitch and just had enough energy to outrun the covering defence to score, Joe Cooke Converted, 63 – 0. In the final 10 mins Craig Newlands scored two more tries and Joe Cooke converted the first but narrowly missed the last, as from a long way out it just dipped beneath the crossbar.
Final Score Redcar 75 South Shields
Shields never gave up as they were falling like nine pins, there must have been 20 mins of injury time for them but they went off and came back on, all credit to them.
