

It was a windless fine day at Redcar as Durham Uni kicked off the last league game of the season. They came out of the blocks all guns blazing but Redcar matched them and both teams played some good counterattacking rugby, it was almost half an hour before there was any score, but inevitably Durham broke through and scored under the posts, 0 - 7. Then again on 35 mins and again on 39 mins.

Redcar restarted the game and again initially withstood the constant fast paced game that Durham were playing, but Durham scored their fourth try on 53 mins, 0 - 28. Redcar had several good attacks into the Durham 22, but were stopped short until on 61 mins Winger Luke Watson burst away up the wing and had too much gas for the covering defence and scored in the corner, 5 - 28. Durham continued to run the ball at every opportunity and scored on 65 mins the conversion hit the post, 5 - 33. In the final 10 mins as Redcar tired, Durham scored 3 more converted tries.

Redcar put in a fine performance played some good rugby, even though the score line doesn’t show it, all of Durham’s tries were from finding a gap and racing away to score under the posts, Durham thoroughly deserved their victory to finish up league champions as they have usually hammered every other team, Redcar showed spirit and potential in this game and deserve a lot of credit.
