Redcar Do The Double Over Blyth

Redcar Do The Double Over Blyth

Dave Pearson16 Feb - 13:37

The weather was cold and damp at Mackinlay Park, but the rugby and Redcar were too hot for Blyth to handle.

There was no wind at Redcar as they kicked off and within a minute Redcar were awarded a penalty but the kick went wide of the posts. It took about 15 mins for the game to settle and Redcar struck first with a try from winger Luke Watson, a lovely cross-field kick from flyhalf Jacob Howie found Luke in space and he ran in, in the corner, 5 - 0. Blyth hit back 2 mins later with a try to level the scores, 5 - 5. On 20 mins Redcar scored again, the backs took play up field and Luke made good ground until tackled and from the resulting maul the ball was passed to substitute Ryan Edwards who scampered up the blind side to score, 10 - 5. Once again 4 mins later Blyth hit back and scored a converted try to take the lead 10 - 12. Their lead was short lived as from the re-start kick Blyth ran the ball and then from an aimless Blyth kick the ball found Redcar’s speed merchant Luke Watson in some space and he ran 40 metres and outpaced the Blyth defence to score and a great kick from Danny Addison added the conversion, 17 - 12.

Half Time Redcar 17 Blyth 12.

Redcar kicked off the second half and immediately Luke scored his hat-trick try, there was no stopping him, as he ran in under the posts from his own half and not a glove was laid on him, it was easily converted by Danny Addison, 24 - 12. As the game progressed Blyth had some chances but gave away too many penalties and Redcar’s defence kept them from adding to the scoreline. On 30 mins Redcar’s full back Lee Collins scored a great try, after a continuous Redcar attack from both backs and forwards resulted in Lee breaking free and cantering in to score, 31 - 12. As the game drew to a close, it was rounded off with Redcar’s sixth try, from who else but Laser Luke Watson, who on the day was almost unstoppable.
Final Score Redcar 36 Blyth 12.
