Westoe kicked off on a cold and damp dismal day at Redcar. For a change there was very little wind. Redcar started well with some good interplay between forwards and backs and after 6 mins were rewarded after a good break from flyhalf Jacob Howie, the ball was passed to open side wing forward Caleb Kasonani who was following up on the wing and he ran in, in the corner, 5 – 0. It was only 4 mins later when Redcar struck again, from the restart Westoe attacked and got close to Redcar’s 22, they won a penalty and took a quick tap and drove on towards the line the ball then went loose and was scooped up by winger Luke Watson he then set off up the field, he chipped the ball over the oncoming defenders and the last one fell on the ball but it went loose and Luke picked it up again and ran on to score, 10 – 0.
Redcar were looking in command now, but when attacking again, a loose pass was intercepted by the Westoe winger and he ran 50 metres unchallenged and scored, 10 – 5. On 27 mins the backs got back in full stride and full back Lee Collins joined the line and went clear, he was tackled but not held and regained he feet and ran on and scored, it was converted by Danny Addison, 17 – 5. As half time approached Westoe again responded and scored their 2nd try.
Half Time Redcar 17 Westoe 10
Redcar restarted the second half and the game went one way then the other with neither team managing to break through but on 55 mins Westoe’s No.8 was given a yellow card for diving headlong into a maul and killing the ball. From the resulting penalty Redcar ran the ball and No.18 substitute Luke Bullman crashed through and scored Redcar’s 4th and bonus point try, 22 -10. Redcar’s captain Mr Versatility James Toward, who is normally a back row player who had been selected in the centre, had to step in to the front row at prop, I’m sure he could play flyhalf, scrum half or anywhere if required and make a decent job of it. On 65 mins second row Shaun Hodgson got a yellow card for a high tackle and a minute later Westoe scored, 22 – 15. With the game now looking close Redcar got a penalty on 32 mins and Danny Addison kicked it to increase the lead to 25 – 15, which was just as well because Westoe hit back on the death and scored a converted try. A close finish but Redcar held out for the win.
