Barney’s first half lead proves too much for Redcar to overcome.

On a good day for rugby Redcar kicked off at Barnard Castle. Barney looked to play from deep and kept the ball well, Redcar’s defence held them out and after 12 mins managed to turn the ball over which led to a penalty in front of the posts 0 - 3. Redcar’s lineout which was normally secure was faltering and offered easy possession to Barney, which allowed their 9 & 10 to dictate the game with good play and tactical kicking, with some good forward carries and play in the backs Barney scored 2 tries 12 - 3. Redcar were too disorganised and loose in their shape to bother Barney, this led to a 3rd Barney try and a sucker punch from a Redcar attack, an intercept allowed Barney to spin the ball wide and score in the corner.

Half Time Barnard Castle 26 Redcar 3

The second half started, and more of the same, a Redcar attack led to a breakaway try for Barney, 33 – 3. That was the story of the half. Intercept passes, uncharacteristic poor tackling, loose play in attack and some dominant forward play and tidy hands and another try from Barney to take the score to 40 -3, meant the game was all but done in 60 mins. Redcar then scored a converted try, 40 – 10, before Barney scored again, 47 – 10. Redcar managed to fight back and on 70 mins scored again, 47 – 17, but 2 mins later Barney scored a converted try, 54 – 17. Redcar still battled on and scored two more tries through their flyer Luke Watson to secure a bonus point, but in the end were nowhere near a much stronger Barney team who were deserved of the spoils!

Jack Cook was awarded Redcar’s player of the match award his play in the loose was outstanding. Thanks to Barney who were great hosts, thanks to Mally who always makes sure our glasses are filled. Redcar are in a rut and it’s hard to see how they get out of it with some injuries and unavailability but go again next week at home to DMP Elizabethans your support will be appreciated!
