High Flyers Redcar Brought Down To Earth At Whitby

Redcar travelled to Whitby sitting top of the league, full of confidence and a little too much complacency. The game started badly for Redcar as a well worked Whitby move found its way to their winger for a try on the outside 5 - 0. The second try also went Whitby way after dominant work from their forwards, 10 - 0. Redcar were next to score 2 after two break away tries saw Luke Watson finish one and then Mathew Curry, 10 - 10. Whitby were to then get their third as their scrum and big ball carriers proved to be difficult for Redcar to deal with, 17 - 10, however before half time another breakaway try saw scrum half Damian Buck dot the ball down, flyhalf Richie Young converted,17 - 17.

Redcar started the second half in better fashion, big carries from the forwards, link up play in the backs and good ball retention were all key before Mathew Curry powered through the centre for his second, 17 - 24. Much of the second half was played between the 22s with scrums, penalties and mistakes dictating the flow of the game. Eventually Whitby made their way up the pitch and bagged their 4th try. 24 - 24. With 8 minutes left on the clock the home team got a penalty in front of the posts and decided to kick putting them 3 points ahead. Redcar did have opportunities in the last 5 minutes but couldn't convert them into points.
