Houghton travelled to Redcar and put a strong display but Redcar eventually found their winning ways.

Redcar kicked off on a cold but relatively windless day at Mackinlay Park. Redcar struggled to get a foothold in the game as Houghton gave as good as they got and defended well. It was 30 mins into the game before Redcar broke their stranglehold, from a lineout the forwards drove up field and then a great burst up the centre by Matty Curry leaving tacklers in his wake, saw the ball fed out to the wing where second row Drew Reader was lurking and he charged away from the covering defence and scored near the corner, Danny Addison with a great kick added the conversion, 7 – 0. Ado then kicked a penalty on 34 mins, 10 – 0. From the restart kick Redcar attacked and the interplay between forward and backs created a space for centre James Fox to break clear and with an outrageous dummy he made ground and passed the ball to Matty Curry who cut through 5 of Houghton’s defending players to run in under the posts, Ado again converting, 17 – 0.

Half Time Redcar 17 Houghton 0.

Redcar kicked off the second half and immediately put Houghton under pressure and after a series of defensive kicks from Houghton, winger Danny Addison caught the ball and went on a rampaging run and looked like he was going to go all the way to score, but he ran out of steam and was tackled in the 22 and the ball came back to the supporting players, then flyhalf Richie Young cut through at good angle to score, 22 – 0. On 65 mins Redcar were now rampant and the forwards driving near to the try line, Houghton were penalised and given a yellow card, from the resulting penalty Redcar opted for a scrum and as they drove forwards the scum was collapsed and the ref awarded a penalty try, 29 – 0. On 70 mins winger Luke Watson scored one of his trademark solo tries, 36 – 0 and 3 mins later prop Steve ‘Bully’ Wilson crashed over and scored. Danny ‘Ado’ Addison who had had a great game converted both tries to bring the game to a close.

Final Score Redcar 43 Houghton 0.

The scoreline does not reflect Houghton’s effort in the game for long periods they fought hard and were unfortunate not to get any reward for their endeavours.
