In a ding dong battle Redcar just edged it.

Horden kicked off to start the new season, on a glorious sunny day at Mackinlay Park and it was soon evident that their scrum would cause a lot of problems for the home side. It only took 11 minutes of continuous scrums and penalties before Horden were awarded a penalty try, 0 – 7. On 19 mins Redcar’s Danny Addison kicked a penalty, to take the score to 3 – 7. Then on 25 mins he scored a try after some good interplay between forwards and backs and Redcar took the lead, against the run of play it must be said. On 31 mins Horden had a penalty attempt but it hit the crossbar. Horden continued to hound Redcar but Redcar’s defence held them till halftime.

Half Time Redcar 8 Horden 7

Redcar restarted the game and after only 2 mins, again Danny Addison kicked a penalty to extend Redcar’s lead, 11 – 7. Horden hit back and on 49 mins scored a try to retake the lead and Redcar’s flanker Brad Smith was shown a yellow card, 11 – 12. On 52 mins it was that man again Danny Addison, to score his second try and to regain the lead for Redcar, 16 – 12. It was short lived because Horden scored 2 more unconverted tries on 60 mins and 65 mins to take the score to 16 – 22. Two mins later winger Luke Watson scored a great try and Danny boy converted it to squeeze Redcar ahead again, 23 – 22.

With only 10 mins to go Horden attacked Redcar’s try line and after being held out time and time again, they finally reverted back to their scrum and pushed Redcar back over their line and scored, 23 – 29. From the restart Redcar charged down field, first the forwards then the backs, they pounded the Horden line and came close several times and then Redcar’s new captain Ian Fox crashed over from close range and scored the bonus point try, 28 -29, with the clock on full time and the conversion to come to win the game, up stepped ‘Ado’ Addison and he calmly slotted it over. The Ref blew full time.

Full Time Redcar 30 Horden 29.

A great game seesawing back and forth. Redcar’s defence was superb, The scrum was under pressure and driven back all game, but they stuck at it and in the end Redcar deservedly got the narrowest of wins.
