Mariners 48 – Guisborough 12
Redcar welcomed Guisborough to Mackinlay Park this weekend for what is always a highly anticipated fixture and one the lads look forward to every season.

The hosts started brightly, and after just five minutes some smooth link-up play from a kick return sent Charlie T over for the opening try. Redcar struck again soon after when the ball was worked wide to winger Paul Darroch, who finished excellently for his first senior try—a strong afternoon for the winger who could easily have added two or three more.
Guisborough then came to life, controlling the final 20 minutes of the first half superbly. Their forwards carried hard, and the visitors showed real patience, stringing together 8+ phase attacks. Their pressure paid off as they crossed for two deserved tries before half-time.
10–12 at the break.

The second half, however, told a very different story. With a rare numerical advantage on the bench, Redcar made full use of their fresh legs. The injection of pace and experience opened up holes in a tiring Guisborough defence, and the Mariners ran in six unanswered tries. Well-worked forward carries created space, the backs played on top, and there was plenty of composure to put teammates through with the final pass when it mattered.

Credit to Guisborough, who stayed in the fight and looked dangerous whenever they had possession, much like in the first half. But Redcar’s defensive effort held firm.

A strong overall performance from the home side, with some lovely rugby played throughout. There was a clear intent not just to win, but to push on and put real pressure on the scoreboard—something the senior squad has been searching for this season.
