Redcar’s young and spirited side pushed an experienced and physically dominant Northallerton team all the way in a thrilling Round 2 clash of the Community Cup, narrowly falling short in a game that showcased heart, growth, and real potential.

First Half
The visitors struck first, using their powerful forward pack — arguably the biggest Redcar will face all season — to full effect. A dominant scrum deep in Redcar’s 22 allowed the Northallerton No. 8 to pick and drive over the line for the opening try. The conversion was missed, giving Northallerton an early 0–5 lead.
Despite the early blow, Redcar showed impressive composure and improving game management. A well-earned penalty gave Jacob Howie the chance to slot home three points, narrowing the gap to 3–5.
However, Northallerton’s size advantage again told before the break. Relentless forward pressure created space in the midfield, and a slick pass through the 12/13 channel saw them cross for a second try, this time converted.

Second Half
Redcar came out firing after the restart, showing real grit and determination against their heavier opponents. Their belief paid off when sustained pressure near the Northallerton line allowed the forwards to edge closer before Brad Smith powered over. Howie added the extras, bringing the home side right back into it at 10–12.
With momentum swinging their way, Redcar looked rejuvenated — playing fluent, attacking rugby. But ambition came at a cost. A couple of over-eager offloads went astray, and Northallerton capitalised ruthlessly. A series of pick-and-go drives near Redcar’s line saw them cross again to stretch their lead to 10–17.
Redcar refused to back down. From a lineout near halfway, Caleb sent a superb ball to Brad, who linked beautifully with Shaun and Damo to draw in defenders. Quick hands out the back found Howie, who danced through several would-be tacklers before Damo’s smart support play released Marc Smith to score a sensational try — one that will surely be a contender for Try of the Season. The gap closed to 15–17.
The final ten minutes were fiercely contested, with Redcar throwing everything at the visitors. Despite their relentless effort and flashes of brilliant rugby, Northallerton’s experience held firm until the final whistle.
