Redcar struggled to field a team, due to Covid, injuries and unavailability, but so are most teams in these difficult times.

Redcar kicked off with the wind advantage but Seaham started the stronger and after only 5 minutes they scored, 0 -5 and 3mins later they scored again, 0 – 12 and already it looked it was going to be a long afternoon for Redcar. There was a large crowd of Redcar’s past players watching as it was a reunion day and Redcar were celebrating its Centenary, 100 years of Redcar Rugby Club, so they were hoping for something to shout about and the team did its best. On 22 mins winger Joe Watkins scored Redcar’s first try, from a well won lineout , the ball was taken on by the forwards then spun out and centre Kieran Mcmahon put in a cross field kick much the same and from the same place as Neil Young’s kick last week but this time it stayed in field and when Seaham missed it winger Michael Hammond pounced on it to score, it was converted by Kev Hartley, 7 – 12. On 30 mins a skirmish broke out and handbags were brandished, the outcome was that a player from either side was given a red card. Seaham scored two more tries, one on 36 mins and another straight from the restart kick, 7 – 24. Just before halftime Redcar pressed the Seaham line and No.8 Steve Johnson scored, the Seaham players questioned the score but the ref stood firm and awarded the try, it was converted by fly half Kev Hartley, 14 – 24.

Halftime Redcar 14 Seaham 24.

Seaham restarted the game now with the wind behind them and immediately took advantage of it scoring on 43 mins, 31 – 14. On 52 mins Redcar’s flyhalf Kev Hartley, had to leave the field injured after having several earlier injury stoppages. Redcar’s injury list was growing and many changes had to be made, but they battled on. Seaham scored two more tries on 58 and 63 mins, 14 – 43. Redcar did have it’s moments and almost scored from a breakaway run and a long kick by Michael ‘Sharky’ Hammond and follow up by him and Joe Watkins but were unlucky, then on 75 mins Redcar rewarded with a try from substitute prop Andy Little who squeezed over from short range after the forwards had put the pressure on Seaham and Kev Hartley (who had returned to the field), kicked over the conversion.

Final Score Redcar 21 Seaham 43.
