On a sunny but chilly day, Redcar and Shields put on a fine display of running rugby to warm the spirits of the watching crowd.

Redcar’s Bar Flies sponsored this last home game of the season and they got a feast of great rugby as Redcar played their best game of the season. North Shields kicked off and looked like a team that would give the home side a tough fast game and for the first 15 minutes they had the best of the play, on 16mins Shields prop No.1 was given a yellow card, but 4 mins later they opened the scoring with an unconverted try, 0 – 5.
Redcar struck back on 25 mins with a try of their own, when a loose ball from Shields was picked up by hooker Lee Phoenix and then taken on by flanker Jacob Unwin, who slipped it to scrum half Joe Allday who crossed the line and turned on the ground and touched it down, 5 – 5. On 30 mins substitute centre Luke Watson outstripped the Shields defence to run in Redcar’s second try, which was converted by flyhalf Shay Barritt, 12 – 5. Shay increased Redcar’s lead with a great long range penalty on 33 mins, 15 – 5. Minutes later a second Shields player was given a yellow card for foul play. Just before half time prop Michael Tucker scored from a driving maul close to Shields line, with Shay Barritt adding the conversion.

Half Time Redcar 22 North Shields 5.

Redcar restarted the game and were now in full flow with Luke Watson scoring again when he picked up a bouncing ball which had been kicked across the field, he evaded the closing defence and went in under the posts, for Redcar’s bonus point try, Shay adding the extras, 29 – 5. Then on 60mins it was centre Danny Addison to score, it came from the forwards putting Shields under pressure in their 22 and then passed out from Joe Allday (who was having a great game), to Shay Barritt who found Danny loitering with intent and he ran it in, 34 – 5. Five mins later with some great interplay from forward and backs, Michael ‘Sharky’ Hammond made a break and it was that man Luke Watson again on hand for the pass and he skipped away, sidestepping the last defender to score a well deserved hat-trick try, 39 – 5 the conversion hit the post.
Shields were still competing for everything and were rewarded with a try on 72 mins which was converted, 39 – 12. As the game drew to a close it was strong running winger Sharky Hammond who scored the last try and it was converted by Shay Barritt, 46 – 12. Shields were a young well drilled team and played some good rugby at times, but on the day they were no match for Redcar who were superb.

Final Score Redcar 46 North Shields 12.
