Redcar made hard work of what should have been an easy game, with lots of handling errors and lack of disciple at times.

Redcar kicked off the game on a lovely mild day without a hint of breeze and straight away they looked they meant business, with only 5 mins played prop Drew Duncan scored after some good interplay between forwards and backs, fullback Danny Addison converted, 7 – 0. The game then settled into a bit of a pattern with Redcar attacking at every opportunity and Houghton relying on their forwards to make ground. On 27mins Redcar scored a set piece try, when from a lineout Neil Young caught the ball and passed it to hooker Richie Evans who ran round from the front of the line and he ran in 25 mitres almost unopposed, again it was converted, 14 – 0. Just before half time Redcar were gifted another try when Houghton’s fullback who was under pressure tried to clear the ball to touch and it bounced up into Andy Benbow’s hands and he scampered up the wing and round under the posts to score, Addison converted, 21 – 0.

Half Time Redcar 21 Houghton 0.

In the second half Redcar again scored within 5 mins, Redcar’s speedster winger Craig Newlands easily out stripped the Houghton defence, 26 – 0. Then came a period of change when Redcar seemed to get on the wrong side of the Spanish referee who gave Andy Benbow and Dominic Ayre yellow cards within 2 mins of each other, and while Redcar were down to 13 men Houghton scored 2 tries, both from scrums close in to Redcar’s line, 26 – 12. Then as Andy Benbow returned to the field the ref gave a yellow to Neil Young (for a hand-off I think).

On 73 mins when Redcar were back to 15 men, normal service was resumed and Redcar scored another try from Craig Newlands and just before the final whistle, centre Matty Curry scored, both were under the posts and both converted by Danny Addison.

Final Score Redcar 40 Houghton 12.
