(Thanks to Damian Buck for this report)
The game started as expect, Ashington with possession used their big forwards to crash the ball up, but Redcars defense stood solid and didn't budge. This was to be a theme for the full game. The first score came from a dominant Redcar scrum that allowed No.8 Ian Fox to run through from 10m out for his first of the afternoon. Soon after Redcar were hit with a double injury as prop Nathan Gibson went off with his knee and scrum half Damian Buck with his calf. On came the replacements who were stepping up for this game and did themselves and the team proud.
Unfortunately from here I don't remember much of the game details. Ian Fox bagged himself another 2 tries with some trademark strong carries and just a desire to carry the ball hard. James Toward try came from a tap penalty and the prop, second row, utility forward, smashed his way over from 10m out. Brad Smith was the 5th try scorer with a defense cutting line and bundled over the line.
The team stood strong all afternoon, matched the physical approach by Ashington and gave nothing in open play.
A final thank you and shout out should go to the boys who travelled and played, all had strong carries of the ball, made their tackles and could easily be pushing regularly for first team positions as the season goes on.
Final Score
Ashington 28 Redcar 31
